PNC returns as presenting sponsor of the Handcycle Division and will also sponsor the Military Mile
PITTSBURGH, PA – PNC Bank will once again serve as presenting sponsor of the Handcycle portion of the 2017 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon. In this year’s Handcycle Division, 24 athletes, including six members from the Paralyzed Veterans’ Racing Team, will compete.
“Each year the veterans and other competing athletes humble us with the strength they demonstrate in the handcycling event,” said Louis R. Cestello, PNC regional president for Pittsburgh. “Their show of character exemplifies the spirit of sport. We wish them well as they negotiate this arduous course and display the physical and mental preparation that distinguishes them among athletes.”
The Pittsburgh Marathon Handcycle Division presented by PNC Bank utilizes the same 26.2-mile course as that run by the marathoners and offers a scenic tour of Pittsburgh, crossing three bridges and traveling through 13 neighborhoods.
In addition to the Handcycle Division, PNC will sponsor the Military Mile, which is located between miles 9 and 10 on the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon course. This dedicated mile of the race route will celebrate and recognize military service.
In 2016, Kenneth Bestine, 49, from Bluffton, SC won the men’s Marathon Handcycle Division presented by PNC Bank in 1:25:59. Ashli Molinero, 44, of Bethel Park, PA defended her 2015 title capturing the 2016 crown in 1:29:25.
The 2017 Handcycle Division will start at 6:50 a.m. on Sunday, May 7. For more information about the Pittsburgh Marathon Handcycle Division, visit thepittsburghmarathon.com/wheelchairdivision.
