Bike tools are just tough to get excited about. Granted, there are Abbey bike tools, PB Swiss, and other mega-expensive tools that some people geek out over, but buying a heavy, clunky multitool to toss in your jersey pocket or saddle bag is about as exciting as buying a new pair of 100% white cotton socks. The folks at Daysaver are trying to change that with the Daysaver Essential8 and the Davsaver Coworking5. Granted, I wasn’t even excited about reviewing them until I began to use them and found out exactly how cool they are.
Who is Daysaver?
Daysaver was evidently started by someone who had a bad bike experience and was left stranded without the proper tools. But there is so much more to be told along with a big Swiss company that got involved. With their first plastic prototype, PB Swiss Tools was approached. It was uncertain how PB Swiss Tools would react, but their response was overwhelming. They were so impressed with the idea that they began collaborating on tool refinement. Over the next few months, the Daysaver team and PB Swiss Tools worked together on the prototype development of their initial tools. Eventually, the first metal prototype was in their hands, just a few months after the initial sketches.
Daysaver bike tools are designed to be compact and multi-functional, catering to riders who need quick solutions for common bike repairs on the trail or road. Typically, these tools include features like tire levers, chain breakers, hex or Torx, and even mini-pumps. They emphasize high Swiss quality, lightweight, simple designs, and easy use. Overall, they have done a great job.
The end result is a “pocket compact” tool you’ll forget you have in your pocket. Daysaver tools are so small and light you won’t even feel them, whether in your shorts pocket, jersey pocket, or backpack.
Below, we look at our setup: the Daysaver Essential8 Multitool, which features 8 hex and torx bits, paired with the Coworking5, which features the essential chain breaker, tire lever, and more. Together, the set will cost roughly $85.00 and weigh in at svelt 68 grams. This setup could save you roughly 60 to 100 grams and cost an extra $30 to $50 over various bike tools.
Daysaver Essential8 Multitool
The Daysaver Essential8 Multitool weighs 33 grams and features 8 various hex and Torx sizes to fit most setups. If you have something odd, you can also get individual-sized tips. The Daysaver Essential 8 Multitool is one of the smallest and lightest bike multitools that we know of, and you can expand functionality with a few lightweight add-ons.
How is it so small and light? Bits nested in bits. Simply flippable as needed and held together by magnets. Just be careful not to drop one in the woods while making an adjustment.
The following bits are included: Hex 8mm, Hex 6mm, Hex 5mm, Hex 4mm, Hex 3mm, Hex 2.5mm, Hex 2mm, and a Torx 25.
Daysaver Coworking5
While the Daysaver Essential8 multitool is great, the big flaw is the lack of everything the Coworking5 offers. I guess that’s where the name Coworking5 comes from, well that and the 5 tools irt offers. Personally, I wouldn’t buy one without the other. Luckily, Daysaver does offer an Essential8 & Coworking5 Bundle for $80.00. Expenisve, but worth it.
The multitool extension Coworking5 offers a quality essential tool incredibly light weight of 35 grams. The small but handy size ensures that it is convenient to use and portable. Magnets hold all tools together and are easy to take apart and put back together. Pair your Essential8 multitool for a great bike tool setup.
Davsaver Coworking5 Features
The Davsaver Coworking5 features 5 key trail-needed tools and pairs nicely with the Essential8 Multitool.
- Chain Breaker: This tool is designed to easily remove the broken links of any 9- —to 12-speed chain. It MUST be used with the Daysaver Multitool or any other tool that features a T25.
- Tire Lever: Big enough to be grabbed properly, stiff enough to remove any tire and flexible enough not to break.
- Spokewrench: With the integrated spoke wrench you can loosen or tighten your wheels spokes even on the ride. This high precision spoke wrench is made of hardened stainless steal and is suitable for professional use.
- Valve-Core Tool: The valve core tool is integrated in the chain breaker as well. It’s strong enough to loosen even stuck tubeless valves. The tool feels good in the hand due to its rounded shape.
- Master-Link Storage: To make sure you have a Master Link with you, we have integrated a dedicated holder. (Master Link is not included). No longer will you need to tape it to your handlebars.
With the Cradle mount, you can also mount the Coworking5 and the Essential8 to your bike, but the jersey pocket works fine.
