Think Helmets Aren’t Important?
So many times I see people riding without helmets on and it really makes me wonder why? Is it the cost? Perhaps the comfort or they feel it makes them look like a dork? As a person who has crashed numerous times and have had my fair share of stitches in my head, face, arms and legs, you will never find me on a bike without a helmet on. Below is a picture of a cracked POC helmet from a fall in 2024. The crash happened while cruising along at 16 mph and just chatting, and bars became tangled, then bodies and bikes went flying. I landed on my back and slammed my head into the asphalt. I can’t even image if I didn’t have a helmet on. It just makes my cringe each time I think about it.

Fit and comfort are important in a helmet. If it doesn’t fit right, it will not offer the protection as designed, and if it’s not comfortable, you won’t want to wear it. The Ventral Air MIPS offers a personalized fit through its 360° adjustment system, allowing riders to fine-tune the helmet’s tension for optimal comfort. The internal padding is designed to manage moisture effectively, keeping sweat away from the rider’s eyes and enhancing overall comfort during long rides.
I have sort of an oval head and the helmet fits me really nice. Some of the forums out there mention that POC offers a good fit for those with a rounder head, but I have noticed different models have a different fit. While some users have noted that the helmet’s shape may not accommodate all head types equally, but this can be said for any brand. It’s advisable pick up at the local bike shop, try before purchasing, or make sure it is returnable if purchased online. Backcountry.com and competitivecyclist.com both have policies.
Ventilation and Aerodynamics
One of the standout features of the Ventral Air MIPS is its exceptional ventilation system. Utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) testing, POC has optimized the helmet’s airflow to ensure maximum cooling efficiency. The helmet features large front vents and internal channels that guide air over the head and out through the rear, effectively reducing heat buildup during intense rides. This design not only keeps riders cool but also minimizes aerodynamic drag. We tested the Ventral in conditions such as midwest heat and humidity, Utah’s high dessert heat, Florida (enough said) and performance was up to par in all locations.

The POC Ventral Air MIPS helmet has a total of 16 vents, comprising eight large forward-facing intakes, six rear vents, and two additional vents on the top of the helmet to facilitate further airflow and heat escape.
The design features internal channels that direct air from the front intakes across the head and out through the rear and top vents, creating a cooling airflow. This system is designed to keep the rider cool while maintaining aerodynamic properties.

Safety Features
Safety is paramount in the Ventral Air MIPS. The helmet incorporates the MIPS Integra system, a rotational impact protection technology that reduces the risk of brain injuries during angled impacts. Unlike traditional MIPS systems, MIPS Integra is seamlessly integrated into the helmet’s padding, maintaining a low profile and ensuring comfort without compromising safety.
Additionally, the helmet’s unibody polycarbonate shell and EPS liner provide robust impact protection while keeping the weight low. This construction enhances the helmet’s structural integrity, ensuring it can withstand the demands of rigorous cycling activities.

The POC Ventral Air MIPS Cycling Helmet is defiantly a premium choice for cyclists seeking a blend of safety, comfort, and performance. A helmet that works on the road, gravel or even trail riding. for hard core MTB riding, I would look a something with a little more coverage on the back of the head, such as the Kortal.
While it comes at a higher price point, the benefits it offers in terms of protection and comfort justify the cost in my opinion. At the end of the day, making it home safely is the most important.
