A message from Patagonia on over consumption and why they don’t do Black Friday promotions and sales. Everything companies make has an impact on the planet and as people most of us can do with less. Explore how Patagonia is reducing their emissions and use of harmful materials, caring for our workers and building better ways to keep your gear in play. Buy better gear, recycle or resell it, get it repaired, and enjoy!
At Patagonia, we don’t participate in Black Friday sales. We believe that engaging in this weekend’s promotions encourages the culture of overconsumption, which directly conflicts with our core mission of being in Business to Save our Home Planet. We hope that taking this stance can inspire a shift toward more conscious consumption during the holidays and throughout the rest of the year.
You can read on Patagonia’s Black Friday page about reinforcing their commitment to selling quality gear and donating the profits to environmental causes. As they have since 2002, Patagonia contributes 1% of sales to 1% For The Planet. Since 2022, Patagonia has issued an annual dividend to the Holdfast Collective, a group of 501(c)(4) nonprofits established by established by founder Yvon Chouinard and his family, enabling the company to donate all money not reinvested back into the company to groups working to save our home planet.
